Last week we were asked to consider, “What does it take to be in the flock of Jesus the Good Shepherd?” Today the follow up of Jesus takes us back to Jesus trying to teach his followers about what will be necessary to be a TRUE disciple or follower. Today Jesus says, “This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” It sounds easy. I do believe; however, the loving that Jesus asks of us is most difficult.
Tour our historic school, visit with classroom teachers, and ask questions from current parents. Meet the administration team, and pick up a registration packet.
In our readings this week we hear of unrest in the early church AND of unification too. The Acts of the Apostles gives us an understanding of the early persecution against Paul and Barnabas who were expelled from their town because they had a new idea. To include the Gentiles in the community was seen as a way of watering down or demeaning the faith of the People of Israel. The gospel story is one where Jesus tells us that those who are his sheep hear his voice, they follow him, they are safe and all this is done because Jesus and the Father are one. These stories are good examples of what it is to be divided AND united.
This week we hear of great readings in those early days of the post-resurrection period. In our first reading we hear of a very STRONG Peter along with the other apostles. These early leaders of our church are being questioned by the officials of the Jewish faith. The Jewish leaders are trying to intimidate the apostles. Peter and the others are not being at all affected by what the Sanhedrin is trying to do. These apostles are convicted in their faith. It is that conviction that gives them the strength to stand up in a time that seems rather daunting.
It’s still the first days of my pastorate here and many things have already happened. These will all become known in the days and weeks ahead. One of the great joys of this past week already has been the daily masses we have shared especially the mass with the school children we celebrated this past Tuesday.
