Religious Education

San Felipe de Neri Parish offers a comprehensive and age appropriate Religious Education Program for students in Kinder through the 12th grade. Our Program includes sacramental preparation for both children and adults. Classes are offered in Spanish for grades K-5th.

Our program aims to provide the following: 

• Knowledge and reverence of the Sacred Scriptures as the revealed Word of God.
• Knowledge of the Sacred Tradition of the Church
• A faithful presentation of the teachings of the Church
• Practical application; to live the Gospel in the daily lives of the students
• Teach and experience prayer as a means of communication and union with God
• Knowledge of the Church’s religious vocabulary
• Tools to live the Gospel in the world by identifying the charitable needs in our community.
• Understanding of the value of the Human Person and the responsibility to live the moral life of a Christian, meanwhile respecting & protecting the dignity of every human person
• Knowledge of the Call to Holiness and provide the tools to grow in sanctity
• Enthusiasm for the Catholic Faith and provide a desire to grow in faith and action

Q: When does religious education start for 2024?
A: Our first day of classes for the English program is Sunday August 18, 2023, at 9:00am and Tuesday August 20, 2024 at 6:30 for the Spanish program

Q: What time and where is is religious education?                        A: Classes in English are every Sunday from 9:00am to 10:30am at the San Felipe Parish School. Classes in Spanish are every Tuesday from 6:00pm to 7:30pm at Salazar Hall at San Jose de Los Duranes.

Q: Is there a fee for religious education?
A: Yes, the registration fee is $25 per student. Families with more than two children (siblings) may have additional fees waived.

Q: When can my child make their sacraments?
A: For students making their First Communion a two-year program is required which normally starts in 2nd or 3rd grade.
For students making their Confirmation a two-year program is required which normally starts in the 8th or 9th grade.

Registration for the catechism year 2024-2025 is open until September 20, 2024
 
The Religious Education program at our parish works diligently with students to instruct them on matters of the faith and have them prepared for the reception of Sacraments. We offer classes for students enrolled in 1st grade through 11th grade. Our first day of Classes is Sunday, August 18, 2024. Classes in English are held every Sunday from 9:00am to 10:30am at San Felipe School. Classes in Spanish are held every Tuesday from 6:30pm to 8:00pm at Salazar Hall (Duranes).
 
* Students in 1st and 2nd grade learn their basic Catholic prayers and are instructed in the importance of a relationship with God through fun activities.
 
* Students in 3rd grade are instructed on the importance of the Sacraments of the Church. During this time we work with students to prepare them to receive the Sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Eucharist (Communion).
Note: Students must complete two years of Religious Education to receive both Sacraments.
 
* Students that have received their First Reconciliation and Eucharist are enrolled in our Post- Communion class. This class is an age appropriate exploration of the Bible and how it relates to our Catholic tradition. Students in this class are usually enrolled in 4th through 7th grade.
 
* Students who are in 8th or 9th grade, are enrolled in first year Confirmation class. During their first year, students are introduced to a religious life and their relationship to the Church.
Note: Students must complete two years of Religious Education to receive Confirmation.
 
* Students who have completed their first year of Confirmation class are enrolled in the second year of the program. The second year of confirmation is centered on engagement with the Church and a basic theological understanding of the faith and receive the actual Sacrament.
